Project HELP 2009 :: update

it’s coming together + we’ve got dates + location for our non-profit project this year. we’ll be up in halifax, nova scotia in august putting this together so stay tuned. in case you’ve missed it this far, myself + staff are donating a week’s worth of energy to a non-profit in need of creative firepower. this year’s recipient is the Network of Young People Affected by War (NYPAW). more here + here. this project has recently been named one of ASMP’s Best of 2009 so we’re all proud of that + ready to get working.

NYPAW is a fantastic new organization founded by an amazing group of young people who have insane backgrounds + experiences with war but have turned themselves around. if you’re interested in their stories check out Ishmael Beah‘s NY Times best selling book ‘a long way gone’. i’m reading it now + hello! it starts with this kicker;

carbon credit

i’ve been working on this idea for the past year + though it’s taken a beating lately with the economy + budgets being what they are i’m really happy with it’s success. i talked about the idea of including an optional line item for clients interested in carbon offset way back when. basically it’s a way to help negate a portion of a nasty cycle.

it’s been a pleasure to work with brands such as cosmo, merrell, 24 hour fitness + a handful of agencies among others on this. always surprising who declines though luckily they have been in the minority but let’s just say that not all companies are what they claim.

my help with this process has come from a great sf based organization called terra pass. specifically, if you’re a business then get in touch with mira rubin karp (business [at] terrapass.com). she’s the sales + busn development manager + can help with everything. the two big ways to work with terrapass is to join their Carbon Balanced Business Program (below) + have mira calculate the amount due to offset your office (electricity, etc). the other is for specific trips as mentioned above. either way she’s a rock star, thanks for all the help mira. here’s her explanation of everything terrapass puts together:

The TerraPass Carbon Balanced Business Program is designed to help businesses balance out the carbon emissions created from their daily operations. Businesses of all sizes have an impact on climate change and we are excited about this opportunity to further engage them in what TerraPass is doing.

here’s a monday pick-me-up that really hit me. don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. the guy’s in this piece via wired have more vision than so many seeing people i know. the creativity involved here is fantastic +i’m into hearing about the various workflows that alex dejong (above) + the others featured employ. jason decamillis shoots with film, a holga being the fav, others are tricking out iphones + taking lightroom to task.

need a different viewpoint, try closing your eyes.

outtakes

one of my favorite aspects of visual media, be it still images, video or hybrid clips, is the ability to go back through everything much further down the road. sometimes this it’s tough to look at everything other times it’s pure joy. regardless, it’s a great way to keep pushing your style forward + chasing that personal evolution we’re all after.

here’s one of my favs from last year.

canon video update

ok so here’s an update from our uber talented video assist + typing fiend at jdk. ross has brought up answers that i wondered about outloud via an earlier post, specifically we’re taking aim at why/how the shutter on canon 5D II’s hd video program controls light + secondly why it stops at 1/30th.

Hey Heath! I’ll take a stab at your first question:
AFAIK the video shutter must be an electronic shutter, meaning that the mechanical shutter is open the entire time, and the image sensor is only “open for business” for the shutter duration. My nikon d40 is able to get down to 1/4000th this way.

The other question is why the shutter speed stops at 1/30th. If I understand your question then it is simple – because the camera needs to shoot 30 frames a second. If it shoots at 1/25th, then it could only shoot 25 frames a second. The only thing the shutter speed controls is what % of that 1/30th of a second the shutter is open for.

and on the same note our man has been kind enough to throw this out for your consumption as well. it’s a beta offering similar to CHDK mentioned back here. wired’s scoop is available as well. haven’t dug in yet myself but that’s what holidays are for right. happy independence everyone, use it well. hard to believe this thing’s been alive two years to the day friday.
