photographer not a terrorist

phnat-logo-white-on-black-212x300 from the ever cheeky uk we get this – photographer not a terrorist. though these folks have a strong euro twist, specifically when it comes to the various legal proceedings, it’s good info. there’s a printable portable info card in case your busted. you’ll find it under the law is an ass listing. in their own words;

Photography is under attack. Across the country it that seems anyone with a camera is being targeted as a potential terrorist, whether amateur or professional, whether landscape, architectural or street photographer.

Not only is it corrosive of press freedom but creation of the collective visual history of our country is extinguished by anti-terrorist legislation designed to protect the heritage it prevents us recording.

This campaign is for everyone who values visual imagery, not just photographers.

We must work together now to stop this before photography becomes a part of history rather than a way of recording it.

not quite in line with this but closer then just about anything else, how to shoot (+ not get shot) in a war zone via gizmodo.

TEN :: things about video

1: it’s not photography + works totally differently

2: it’s still visual + ideas do translate

3: takes twice as long to shoot + four times as long to process a final product

4: you can’t do it all yourself

5: sound is an entirely different beast then what you’re used to. use the right people + equipment (see above)

6: it’s time to upgrade your video card

7: the creativity is boundless

8: did i mention how much fun it is

9: canon will offer variable frame rates one day + everyone else will follow

10: super 8 is really, really fantastic (more on this soon)

3 things we all should do

20090822_mtpool_25

1: evaluate take a hard look at what you’re doing. i like the hop, skip, jump metaphor – where are you in terms of where you want to be? do you have a goal? if not how can you hit what you’re not even aiming at? when you’re done with all three of these steps, start back here. evaluation is a constant process. if what you’re doing is not getting the desired results then reevaluate + shake things up.

2: plan take everything you can into account. there will always be variables so focus on what you can. eliminate distractions + balance out what you can do with what you have. take action in the form of conscious steps in your given direction. could be recruiting the kind of employees you have your eye on, a fat new promo campaign or a great job lead, doesn’t matter. hell, even the a team had a plan.

3: work really this is what we all want to be doing but to get here you have to go through the above. this, my friends, is your reward – total unadulterated work in the vein of what you want to do + have created for yourself. the trouble that most of us have with this is that it doesn’t stop. and the further you get into it the crazier it gets. if you can’t handle that or really need your sleep, it might be time to think about something more 9 to 5ish. get started + don’t stop, ever. believe it or not, that’s actually half the fun once it gets going.

Best of 2009

20081002_camerrell2_1089

the word is out. asmp has put out their Best of 2009 covering the finest assignments + images from the past year + it’s with great thanks + humility that i find myself included. in reality it’s the entire office + crew from a rather large shoot that deserves all the credit as it was a monstrous team effort. thanks to asmp + the judges for throwing this together + large congratulations to the other selections. i’m happy to be in such fine company.

if you’re a member you should find the print version hitting your mailbox any day now. if not, or if you find yourself in nyc later in oct, then stop in the asmp booth at photoplus expo this year to catch all the winners in print. grab a shot for me as i’m otherwise occupied then + you’ll find a hk designed american apparel tshirt headed your way.

on a more important note, i’d like to give a large shoutout to the photographers featured in the current issue of pdn covering photographers making a difference. the projects look fantastic + uber inspiring. how can you go wrong with james nachtwey, jonathan torgovnik + robert kent (way into his compassionate eye set up with getty). i encourage everyone to delve into similar works of their own as well as support those going on around you. we’re caught up in our 2009 Project HELP + are excited to pull that together soon.

2009 Project HELP :: update

Picture 3

so we’re still working on tying this thing together. it’s as slippery as a greased pig lately but everything is falling into place now. as of last update we were to be shooting in halifax a few weeks ago. at the last minute we found out that only 3 of the NYPAW founders would be present. with that in mind + after speaking with the organizers + NYPAW advisers we decided to hold off. there was another upcoming event they filled us in on.

that leaves us where we are now – waiting. waiting to see everything fall into place, waiting to see if we can get all or most of the young NYPAW founders together in one place + really waiting to help this fantastic new group out. if you’re unfamiliar with the group or our effort to help a non-profit out this year then check this or this out.

the latest plan has us in nyc in november covering a youth conference where NYPAW members will not only be present but will be speaking at UN headquarters. this could get interesting. already have our sound engineer in nyc ready to jump in so the disparate ends are coming together.

this month’s pdn looks like it covers working with non-profits as well as shooters who make a difference though can’t vouch for that as haven’t read it yet. let me know. (this is off subject but a good piece via pdnonline as well.) and if you’re into hypothetical situations, track down someone from the class i taught last week + ask them about our ‘greening photography’ cafe shoutdown. thanks everyone.

enjoying a fantastic week in the sunny five valley capital of western montana teaching a class with the rocky mtn school of photography. i’m working with a great group of individuals that has restored my faith in group dynamics. working through mtn biking + location lighting among other things + skill have kayaking / river surfing coming up. i also had a chance to team up with friends at counter production to create a series of stills for their upcoming documentary americans which i can’t wait to see in it’s entirety.

and if you’re in the area what a stellar week to be around. free show by cracker this friday not too mention modest mouse, marilyn manson + g luv. though the real excitement is the visual smorgasbord this week. currently up at the rmsp gallery is a show by william albert allard titled her picture in a frame. i haven’t had a chance to catch it yet but the way i fogged up the window the other night peeking in i think it’s fair to see it looks enchanting. here’s the official description:

Her Picture in a Frame consists of what Allard refers to as found pictures, many taken at a glance
