exposure

talking with another photographer lately + interested in his take on publication as promotion. basically said that he works to get his name out in as many venues as possible, editorial + commercial, because that acts as advertising + promotion for his work. i’m not sure that putting one’s name anywhere is the best strategy but am enamored with the idea of publication as promotion.

nice spread here for southwest airlines in the current version of spirit, their in-flight mag.

thank you

in an industry as fickle + funny as this visual media environment we work in i’d like to send a large heart felt thank you to you + everyone who has helped make this year what it’s been. everything i’ve had the pleasure of collaborating on that has been just that – much more then one person.

so to you fine reader, art buyer, phone caller, promo printer, portfolio deliverer, photo editor, creative director, person at front desk, taxi driver, plane flyer, seat neighbor, baggage handler, camera operator, sound technician, craft server, multi tasker, busy producer, video editor, talented model, hero assistant + everyone else – this love’s for you (courtesy of my oldest son).

how hard is it?

very hard to put it bluntly.

what do ya mean? didn’t you just show up there with your camera + shoot a bit?

not on your life – but glad it came across as that calm + natural.

looking around through the glimmer + shine existing everywhere today + it’s easy to find great work. it’s also easy to assume that this work happens on it’s own or really doesn’t have much of a backstory. but like a good film, without backstory you get a spineless mess that usually collapses on itself.

if you don’t believe me take a look at recent contest winners + start your reverse engineering. in a time crunched, cgi soaked industry it’s relatively easy to assume, “ahh, i have a 5DII with hd i can pop that sucker up on my tripod anywhere + put a fancy pants little ditty together.” and nothing could be further from the truth.

my current estimate in regards to motion work is that it takes quad as long as still image work. of course we’re not limited to pictures (motion or still) with this theme. office time, production work, personal projects, life’s little gifts – everything is evolving + to capitalize on it all takes a unique blend.

here are a few things i’ve found lately that currently or shortly will be enlisted in the effort.

hitchcock – luv keeping ideas moving forward. i firmly believe that if you’re not doing something everyday toward your goals then they’re not happening

evernote’s latest upgrade – great cross everything platform for organizing the myriad vitals

google wave – i was just invited to beta test this potential game changing tool. especially interested in it as project development tool

tilt + shift – purely for the visual fun

design

why did i wake up in my old house + look out my bedroom window only to look into my neighbors bedroom? why, when i take a drink of water in the men’s locker room at the gym am i at eye level with the swimsuit dryer + a naked bloke’s junk literally 3 ft away? why do i still have to physically push buttons to make things happen on my computer?

In most people’s vocabularies, design means veneer. It’s interior decorating. It’s the fabric of the curtains of the sofa. But to me, nothing could be further from the meaning of design. Design is the fundamental soul of human-made creation that ends up expressing itself in successive outer layers of the product or service.
Steve Jobs

ideo’s tim brown humbly touches on design – ‘building in order to think’ – as a lifestyle in the following ted video. isn’t this the way that most people think? how can you not be aware of your surroundings be it in business, in life or while being creative? design isn’t simply something that happens but rather an effort of awareness put in the appropriate place at the right time or even all the time.

what your taste in beer says about you

are we really all that original? are our tastes, + to some degree vision, influenced by those around us, those online with us, those spewing towards us? most say no + march on unaware really how exposed they are.

i’m on the other side. there’s no doubting how much we pull in every single waking second. and with the direction advertising’s going probably will be taking in while sleeping soon enough as well. we all profess to be in on the latest greatest independent music, movie, taste + what do we do with it – we post it online every chance we get. we aren’t machines + this type of extraneous exposure to fads, trends + ‘the latest’ has to lead us, to some degree, down the very path we attempt to avoid. is imaging working the same way.

whether it’s your taste in beer or your taste in music(via the ny times below), we have reasons + to a large extent those reasons also have us. they grip us into acting, well, like humans. in other words, we are unable to dissect out associations with brands or bands from the actual product. we’re not computers, we process cultural information + that is a good thing. most of the time. at least when we’re not secretly digging on celine + britney.

Project HELP 2009 :: update

csi

whew, talk about planning + production. in the fluctuating world of non-profit work we’ve had to make a few changes to our plan for this years’ project. we’re excited to be working with NYPAW (network of young people affected by war) + in order to make our project a success we’ve decided to postpone our collaboration until feb 2010 when we’ll be shooting stills + video with each of the founding members while they attend UN meetings in nyc.

stay tuned for more + keep in mind that the 2010 version of project HELP will be announced with the turning of the new year (see the 2009 version here). if you know a non-profit in need of a new visual media voice then have them check back soon.

and if you’re interested in the ‘lost boys’ + the plight of african children, or any children for that matter, affected by war cnn has a story today you should read. Kuol Dut was six when he was essentially turned out on his own to face the horrors of war + the worst life could offer. today’s he’s 27 + graduating from college here in the us.

to see what these children have done with theirs lives is absolutely moving. it’s inspiration in the purest form + i encourage you to get involved in your own way. as a new father of two boys i can’t explain how vital + totally innocent kids can be. i can say that i’m stoked to be putting a hand out to those who themselves are reaching.
