roadtrip: ashland, or

great assignment in southern, or earlier this week. here’s the view from the iphone. haven’t been that way since i was yosemite big wall bound with little more then a haulbag + 100 lbs of gear so amazing to reconnect.

more assignments lined for the next few weeks so will roll out the work as it’s published. in the meantime, i’m speaking at the art institute of portland tonight. telling the kids everything they need to hear but probably haven’t.

the feeling

that pit in your stomach. the hunch in your gut.

sometimes you just have to roll with it.

it ain’t gonna happen anywhere but doing what you do. so. go. do. it.

at some point you’ve got to drop the measuring, the books + all the extraneous elements. what makes the most of photography is photography. works that way with life too.

old school

the moving process is off to a slow but steady start. going through the old files for a few reasons, namely to get 4×6 prints out to the good folk who’ve come this far with me. the adventures have been far + wide over the last 12 years based here in the rockies.

as i come across the gems i’ll post a few here. here’s ex pro mtn biker + all around hard charging nice guy pete. much thanks for all the dirt, sweat + blood over the years pete.

the case for small lights

while our ability to get more out of technology increases it’s fantastic to see weights + sizes shrink in regards to our gear. if you travel often then this is an even bigger boon. in addition to traveling i often find myself in places that can rightly be described as ‘out there’ – either in terms of sheer remoteness or the vertical plane. in these situations while lighting is important it’s often is forced to the backseat. i think that’s changing though + here are a few ideas why.

pocket wizard’s relatively new Control TL system is a solid start. not only is it a well put together package (carrying case + all) but it’s small. + more then simply being small though it doesn’t give up any functionality. in fact, it adds to your arsenal by making it possible to work with your lights at higher speeds (hypersync – see above), full TTL, as well as slave more lights then with previous releases. i’ve been able to test a pair over the past 6 months (thanks guys) + appreciate what they’ve done with the size + efficiency.

caught this recently + while i’m not fully down with it yet i like the concept + the momentum. reminds of the randonee vs tele bindings about 5 years ago + the rumors of merging that were pervasive. i am a fan of litepanels though.

NAB 2010 – Litepanels LED light and strobe combined for 5DmkII and 7D from Dan Chung on Vimeo.

what is it with small lights? they’re uber mobile for travel + modes when weight is important. also for set up as they can easily be rearranged to get precisely what you’re after or accommodate the action or talent. accuracy in terms of getting light where you need it – particularly in cramped or difficult to reach angles. their ease of use is hard to beat (this is not to be confused with mastery). easy to replace batteries + more accessories then one life can handle.

are there downsides, of course. but i’ll leave that up to the cynics.

support…

the impossible project. impossible is nothing.

their first round of film, PX 100 + 600 Silver Shade, based on the what polaroid used to make, ie, the old stuff, is out this week in nyc + there’s more to come. i’ll be updating more of my polaroid work here on the blog once we make a few changes later this spring. lo-fi in general will be making a larger appearance.

in the meantime, get some of that film, a t shirt or hell, even the original polaroid still out there though prices are going thru the roof.

the most overlooked tool

just gave it a workout. can’t tell you how many times it’s saved my hide (not to mention broken the truth to me). when was the last time you sat down + had a conversation with yours? you even know where it is?
