one sheet of paper?

with only one piece of white paper, how do you introduce yourself + abilities to the world?

this is intense

i hear about persistence as a key to success now more then ever. in fact, just got a newsletter talking about it again this am. + while i’m a believer in that i’ve always felt there’s more to it.

my accordion teacher back in the day used to say that the “practice makes perfect” maxim is a bunch of bullshit. it should really be “perfect practice makes perfect”. her philosophy, which i’ve so readily adapted, is that you can’t just put your head down + expect repeat motions to get you ahead. there has to be conscious fuego behind it. it’s not just a persistence that pushes work forward but that combined with a form of what i’m realizing is intensity.

look around – you see it everywhere in success.

crazed people pursuing projects with wild abandon without fear of the consequences. it’s not a loud spraying of personal attributes or greatness but rather an eternal burning, a ceaseless drive.

persistence on it’s own is fine. it does move things along. i’m just not so sure that that direction is forward.

this kid cudi tune, pursuit of happiness, from lissie does it for me lately. (check out the bassist double dutying the drums.)

premiere :: the escape

happy to premiere my new movie, the escape, here.

was a fantastic project made that much better by the people + location. great to team up with andre, editor of the wildly popular reverie, as well as our tunesmith in nyc, dominic, with his tight original score. appreciate all the hard work by rich our main man + thanks to jodi + those who didn’t make the final cut. next time i promise. + thanks to jeff at gravityshots for his acrobatics (still want that creek shot).

change

it’s happening everywhere lately. just made the jump back to my hometown of portland, or + feels fantastic to be in the middle of west coast things again. if you’re wondering about the site, working on a new never before seen dandy of a layout that will be making an appearance soon.

also on the change bandwagon, apple released their latest iphone to much buzz this am + good to see the envelope being pushed even further. the display resolution looks fantastic + the camera/video features are a definite upgrade. excited to see what people will be putting together with a 5x zoom + built in LED flash. not to mention 720p video + native imovie.

in stretching for new heights you’ve got to carry your inspiration. doesn’t matter to me if you wear it on your sleeve or keep it hidden away but you need to know down deep what you’re after. if things don’t work, shake them up. in the words of frightened rabbit’s latest, “swim, ’til you can’t see land”. or without a tune via robert allen, “Everything you want is just outside your comfort zone.”

nike’s latest for the impending world cup is a great light for this. haven’t seen this much story in an ad before. “write the future” is more of a finely tuned kick ass movie then an ad but damn if it doesn’t leave an impression. leave it to w+k to lay it on thick.

ps – just for laughs + if you like the big picture, then try out ian collins’ the big caption.

super 8 sneak peak

super 8 indeed – it’s been my favorite thing out there for months now + heightened even more so with my recent acquisition of the very canon camera my dad used when i was a kid. straight outta the 70′s. still had film in it + the batteries worked for a few minutes.

in conjunction with the pending new release (enough templates already) of my super custom site here’s a bit of rachel’s road trip in super 8 with hd by a canon mark II + a sony EX3.

the case for small lights

while our ability to get more out of technology increases it’s fantastic to see weights + sizes shrink in regards to our gear. if you travel often then this is an even bigger boon. in addition to traveling i often find myself in places that can rightly be described as ‘out there’ – either in terms of sheer remoteness or the vertical plane. in these situations while lighting is important it’s often is forced to the backseat. i think that’s changing though + here are a few ideas why.

pocket wizard’s relatively new Control TL system is a solid start. not only is it a well put together package (carrying case + all) but it’s small. + more then simply being small though it doesn’t give up any functionality. in fact, it adds to your arsenal by making it possible to work with your lights at higher speeds (hypersync – see above), full TTL, as well as slave more lights then with previous releases. i’ve been able to test a pair over the past 6 months (thanks guys) + appreciate what they’ve done with the size + efficiency.

caught this recently + while i’m not fully down with it yet i like the concept + the momentum. reminds of the randonee vs tele bindings about 5 years ago + the rumors of merging that were pervasive. i am a fan of litepanels though.

what is it with small lights? they’re uber mobile for travel + modes when weight is important. also for set up as they can easily be rearranged to get precisely what you’re after or accommodate the action or talent. accuracy in terms of getting light where you need it – particularly in cramped or difficult to reach angles. their ease of use is hard to beat (this is not to be confused with mastery). easy to replace batteries + more accessories then one life can handle.

are there downsides, of course. but i’ll leave that up to the cynics.

vertical video

with the release of the jesus pad this past weekend there’s no doubt that many aspects of visual media + the publishing industry will change. one part of that in particular that i’m interested in is the concept of vertical video. it seems almost non existent today + yet i hear predictions that it’s on the way in a large scale + i’d have to agree.

coming from a photography background one of the very first things i did with my 5D II was shoot vertical video. not because i knew at all what i was doing but purely from a visual standpoint as i was used to seeing that way. in that vein, i’m interested in seeing what the online editions of your fav mags adopt – seems to me that there’s a place for vertical video to fit within the print columns that dominate our publishing industry. i’m already concepting a project for later this year that will be anchored in the vertical format. in the time being, let’s see if this blows up or not.

here’s a dated test sequence of animated stills that gives a small taste of vertical, though in this case it’s running splitscreen. definitely a fan of this as it makes vertical stills or footage that much more versatile as the clip could run as stand alone vertical embedded in an online mag column but could pop out to standard 4:3 or 16:9 once open in it’s own page.

lightroom 3 tethered

here’s a run through of the latest from adobe on the lightroom front. version 3 beta 2 came out a week ago + i took it for a test run on a shoot for top secret project called broken. adobe’s refined a handful of things with this beta + there’s something like 350,000 of us current users waiting for the real thing sometime this summer. among other features is a revamped tethering capability that is solid so far.

to get tethered shooting working you’ll need a few things:

first, make sure your camera’s compatible. the canon 5dII is good to go as are most recent bodies.

next you’ll need either a usb or firewire cable (should come with camera). at this time it doesn’t look like the wireless transmission units currently on market are compatible. i imagine this could change in the future.

then download lightroom 3 + it’s as easy as file/tethered capture/start tethered capture.

overall it couldn’t be smoother. granted i was working with a short cord + raw images + all was solid. i would definitely like a few more things, however;

the ability to have the raw images on both the card + the hard drive. better yet an option to toggle back + forth so that if you’re ever card free you could always shoot tethered. better workflow wise though to have all the images in one place. if you start tethered + then jump off you’ll have images in two different place but not in a completely redundant way.

like to see more options on the shoot bar within lightroom. great to see the camera controls + have a nice lg shutter but the horizontal bit takes too much room. i’d like to be able to opt for a vertical stack as well.

this would be brilliant for video as well. when’s that out adobe? you’ve gone far enough with this beta to include video import + metalogging into lightroom so how far off are we? be way smooth to pull a histogram up with live video while you have one subject interview another etc, without you even being in the same room. the day that comes around + works wirelessly i’ll be one happy puppy as canon already has video doable over their WFT-E4A.

if that isn’t enough of the future for you in one day, try this from the photoshop front or this from ol’ pogue himself on the iphone front.

and lastly, rip jim marshall
