Best of 2009

20081002_camerrell2_1089

the word is out. asmp has put out their Best of 2009 covering the finest assignments + images from the past year + it’s with great thanks + humility that i find myself included. in reality it’s the entire office + crew from a rather large shoot that deserves all the credit as it was a monstrous team effort. thanks to asmp + the judges for throwing this together + large congratulations to the other selections. i’m happy to be in such fine company.

if you’re a member you should find the print version hitting your mailbox any day now. if not, or if you find yourself in nyc later in oct, then stop in the asmp booth at photoplus expo this year to catch all the winners in print. grab a shot for me as i’m otherwise occupied then + you’ll find a hk designed american apparel tshirt headed your way.

on a more important note, i’d like to give a large shoutout to the photographers featured in the current issue of pdn covering photographers making a difference. the projects look fantastic + uber inspiring. how can you go wrong with james nachtwey, jonathan torgovnik + robert kent (way into his compassionate eye set up with getty). i encourage everyone to delve into similar works of their own as well as support those going on around you. we’re caught up in our 2009 Project HELP + are excited to pull that together soon.

missoula, mt

enjoying a fantastic week in the sunny five valley capital of western montana teaching a class with the rocky mtn school of photography. i’m working with a great group of individuals that has restored my faith in group dynamics. working through mtn biking + location lighting among other things + skill have kayaking / river surfing coming up. i also had a chance to team up with friends at counter production to create a series of stills for their upcoming documentary americans which i can’t wait to see in it’s entirety.

and if you’re in the area what a stellar week to be around. free show by cracker this friday not too mention modest mouse, marilyn manson + g luv. though the real excitement is the visual smorgasbord this week. currently up at the rmsp gallery is a show by william albert allard titled her picture in a frame. i haven’t had a chance to catch it yet but the way i fogged up the window the other night peeking in i think it’s fair to see it looks enchanting. here’s the official description:

Her Picture in a Frame consists of what Allard refers to as found pictures, many taken at a glance

get involved

with winter moving in and crowds heading indoors here’s a few options to get involved. whatever the outlet may be get your opinion together and get it out there.

youtube: project direct – upto 5 minutes of pure independent short film with little more than a red telephone to get you started. like to go head to head with out video jockey … then jump on this. deadline is only two+ weeks off.

rowell award – the 2008 award for outstanding accomplishments in the field of outdoor photography. last year’s winner was jim balog so the bar is high for this go round. nominations due 12.31.

and this is my favorite visual in a long time. whatever you do, be inspired. shoot what you know. what you see. what you feel slipping between your fingers. in the case of phillip toledano this is dayswithmyfather. perhaps one of the most powerful hidden gems on the entire online universe, this story moves me, the layout by portland wunderkind’s fashionbuddha leaves you with a stipped down experience perfectly suited to the material. dig in.

breakin’ ala local events

good week all across the west this first week of oct 2008. here are a few things that were i not working in california i would definitely consider.

pdxthe grassy knoll gallery in old town (right around the corner from the old cal’s skate shop) is hosting an eye-catching reception for first thursday – 10.2.08 – ward jenkins will be presenting his exhibtion “b-boy”. and to really add to the authenticity of the event a slew of pdx’ best breakdancers will be on site performing including Randm-1, Impulse, Skywalker of Moon Patrol Crew and guest DJ Computer Fam. ward dabbles in a bit of everything and is the brains behind The Ward-o-Matic blog about in his words “art, animation and anything aesthetically pleasing to the eye”.

seattle – killer photographer charles peterson, himself a b-boy and rock n roll fan, spits out a brilliant new book entitled cypher. it chronicles petersons adventures with breakdancing across 6 years and events in pdx, seattle, la and nyc. and to add to the fun he did it mostly in medium format – superb touch charles. i wish there was an actual event for this, maybe in the near future. here’s the blurb from the publisher;

Acclaimed rock photographer Charles Peterson is back with a new subject

Slideluck Potshow

Ever since I came back from Japan the first time with 30+ rolls of Fuji film and went through each image on screen with friends watching (or sleeping) I have really had it bad for slideshows. I’m not talking about the slick productions with matching tunes and wine or the current video laced clips but the old school E6 in a loud projector. It’s always kind of held a fascination for me similar to records (which I collect).

Here’s everyone’s chance to relive that style of show. I haven’t personally been to one of these yet but I’m looking forward to when I can make it. Slideluck Potshow is a non-profit potluck series for members of the arts and media built around an open community exhibiting images and sharing food. More on their website but the next show’s coming up in Portland.

Sounds like a great gig and it’s open to all willing to take risks regardless of experience. Everyone is treated equal with no more than 5 minutes for a show and ranges from those who have never publicly shown work to the likes of Chris Buck, Alec Soth & Martin Schoeller among others.

So grab a sixpack of brown bottles and settle in for a real show.
