the greatest movie ever sold. should be quite the statement on the state of advertising + marketing. props to the sponsors who stepped up + at least acknowledged what the majority of us already realize about product placement + hollywood.

morgan’s been everywhere lately but caught a great interview with him on the mark + brian radio show yesterday.

if you’re around for some of the flicks there’s a mix of short films + a few new longer inclusions this year as well. there will also be a filmmakers panel after two of the showings. i’ll be spewing on one of those after the sat 5pm showing so if you’re up for an earful drop by. actually, stoked to be on a panel with producer kevin sullivan.

Our Filmmaker Q+A sessions are powerful nights in the theater, an opportunity to get to know the creative minds behind some of Filmed by Bike’s favorite movies.

When the LCD Soundsystem remade the video for their song Drunk Girls, they chose to film it with a cadre of Portland bikers. The result is a gritty party video. Producer Kevin Sullivan will be on stage to discuss this piece, why they chose Portland, how they found the actors and how they developed the rough-and-tumble concept of an underground tall bike jousting bout.

whatever it is, i’ve always found something in even the grey days, even the most mundane reading, even the slow times. this last weekend i had the privledge of shooting the 39th annual portland marathon for runner’s world. it started in the dark + the rain + only the dark part of that equation changed for the better. needless to say, we were after a very specific look + the conditions weren’t helping.

along comes this fine gent merrily making the most of his day…. + his bicep. had to laugh at the time but looking back i think it was the break i needed to snap me back to attention. bring the focus out of the grey + into what i was really doing. which is what i’m passionate about. you can’t have the good days, the great shots, the peak moments without the grey ones. even if you don’t live in the great pacific nw.

so good friends over at counter production are finally putting the finishing touches on their latest documentary – americans. was fantastic working with them last year in montana on the blackfeet nation. what an amazing place + amazing people with a heartfelt story to share.

this was the inspiration for my blackfeet gallery. of which we’ll be releasing more images once the movie is out so as not to give away too much. you can also see my pdn photo annual shot done on location on the reservation here. really stoked on cp’s work + the new site. keep an eye for release dates for this sucker, especially if you live near an independent film festival.

nico’s got fantastic production stills to share from this job + previous work all over the place – italy, new zealand, india + more. definitely take a look.

+ if you think you work hard, try making a small scale independent doc. nico + anna + crew busted chops for more then a year on this thing. entirely funded via donations + local support including a handful of local museums. here’s a shot of the trailer that was home in east glacier for a few months until it got too cold. + if you ever get the chance, jump in. it’s worth it.

the word is out. asmp has put out their Best of 2009 covering the finest assignments + images from the past year + it’s with great thanks + humility that i find myself included. in reality it’s the entire office + crew from a rather large shoot that deserves all the credit as it was a monstrous team effort. thanks to asmp + the judges for throwing this together + large congratulations to the other selections. i’m happy to be in such fine company.

on a more important note, i’d like to give a large shoutout to the photographers featured in the current issue of pdn covering photographers making a difference. the projects look fantastic + uber inspiring. how can you go wrong with james nachtwey, jonathan torgovnik + robert kent (way into his compassionate eye set up with getty). i encourage everyone to delve into similar works of their own as well as support those going on around you. we’re caught up in our 2009 Project HELP + are excited to pull that together soon.

and if you’re in the area what a stellar week to be around. free show by cracker this friday not too mention modest mouse, marilyn manson + g luv. though the real excitement is the visual smorgasbord this week. currently up at the rmsp gallery is a show by william albert allard titled her picture in a frame. i haven’t had a chance to catch it yet but the way i fogged up the window the other night peeking in i think it’s fair to see it looks enchanting. here’s the official description:

rowell award – the 2008 award for outstanding accomplishments in the field of outdoor photography. last year’s winner was jim balog so the bar is high for this go round. nominations due 12.31.

and this is my favorite visual in a long time. whatever you do, be inspired. shoot what you know. what you see. what you feel slipping between your fingers. in the case of phillip toledano this is dayswithmyfather. perhaps one of the most powerful hidden gems on the entire online universe, this story moves me, the layout by portland wunderkind’s fashionbuddha leaves you with a stipped down experience perfectly suited to the material. dig in.
