the feeling

that pit in your stomach. the hunch in your gut.

sometimes you just have to roll with it.

it ain’t gonna happen anywhere but doing what you do. so. go. do. it.

at some point you’ve got to drop the measuring, the books + all the extraneous elements. what makes the most of photography is photography. works that way with life too.

the most overlooked tool

just gave it a workout. can’t tell you how many times it’s saved my hide (not to mention broken the truth to me). when was the last time you sat down + had a conversation with yours? you even know where it is?

roots

i’m a huge believer in keeping things as real as possible regardless how crazy this ride called life throws one’s way. it’s amazing the egos + totally wacked elements that make their way into photography, visual media + our lives in general but it’s simplest terms it’s mostly bullshit. i’ve always tried to maintain ties to roots + though always throwing new things never letting go of that core ‘me’.

this might be something i learned early in life from my parents who were always there for me, solid as rocks regardless if i wore different colored shoe laces or dyed my hair. it might be from some generous elder who offered me the insight that if i made up my mind ahead of time, even for things i’m only vaguely expecting, it will make my actions that much firmer. it might be from little league baseball where i learned to think before each play, “what will i do if the ball comes to me”. it might be something i learned from a japanese professor in college who told me prior to my first trip abroad that i wouldn’t come back the same person.

in essence i think it’s a bit of all of this. it’s about finding that core of who you are, what you believe in + making a decision that those ‘roots’ won’t ever change. you’re ideals, positions, etc will vary constantly but those roots that are you are there to stay. this works for me in all my wanderings + adventures – both the fun kind + the life kind.

with that in mind it’s been fun for me to see to be reminded about lately. like with the latest issue of Kootenay Mountain Culture magazine with my name in the contributing photographer’s credits. and seeing snowboard photography icon trevor graves bringing out his old school snowboard images on facebook. and in the vein of this obvious root connection to the snow, the story on jarem frye in this month’s outside. i shot with jarem + a crew of amputee boarders a few years ago on mt hood + learned + was inspired. so here’s to staying true + staying yourself.

Best of 2009

20081002_camerrell2_1089

the word is out. asmp has put out their Best of 2009 covering the finest assignments + images from the past year + it’s with great thanks + humility that i find myself included. in reality it’s the entire office + crew from a rather large shoot that deserves all the credit as it was a monstrous team effort. thanks to asmp + the judges for throwing this together + large congratulations to the other selections. i’m happy to be in such fine company.

if you’re a member you should find the print version hitting your mailbox any day now. if not, or if you find yourself in nyc later in oct, then stop in the asmp booth at photoplus expo this year to catch all the winners in print. grab a shot for me as i’m otherwise occupied then + you’ll find a hk designed american apparel tshirt headed your way.

on a more important note, i’d like to give a large shoutout to the photographers featured in the current issue of pdn covering photographers making a difference. the projects look fantastic + uber inspiring. how can you go wrong with james nachtwey, jonathan torgovnik + robert kent (way into his compassionate eye set up with getty). i encourage everyone to delve into similar works of their own as well as support those going on around you. we’re caught up in our 2009 Project HELP + are excited to pull that together soon.

a different point of view

as a visual person i’m always on the lookout for anything new, unique + angles that really stand out – a variation on a perspective that adds a touch more light or different visual cues that skew our ‘norm’. though not a huge fan of aerial work there is much i admire about it. in terms of it’s ability to really open our minds to old material + landscapes.

my friends at gravityshots have just such a great thing going. here’s a new school example of what rc heli’s + a spot of determination can do. their style of low level aerial work is becoming more common but jeff + adele have done an amazing job with little more than a ton of practice + fantastic environments. keep an eye on them.
