creativity?

burden. curse. life. unconscious.

so many ways to look at it.

really like fiest’s take on it as a collaborative effort (as evidenced by her work w/ broken social scene in years past). the new documentary on her grammy nominated album “the reminder” called look at what the light did now features great pieces from her “amplifiers” as she calls them.

brilliant trailer + concept. why isn’t photography more like this? or is it?

“it’s just more exciting to bring it to life with people.”

This week, I was lucky enough to attend a screening for the new documentary about Feist, “Look at What The Light Did Now.” The film follows the recording of Leslie Feist’s 2007 album The Reminder, and includes interviews with her “amplifiers” — everyone involved in the creative process, from laying down tracks to designing album artwork. I especially loved seeing how Montreal artist Clea Minaker developed the shadow puppetry that Feist’s live shows are famous for. If you like her music, or if you’re just interested in seeing an awesome artistic movie, you should check it out.

for some reason, i think of daniel johnston here too.

you will be missed

opening today

the greatest movie ever sold. should be quite the statement on the state of advertising + marketing. props to the sponsors who stepped up + at least acknowledged what the majority of us already realize about product placement + hollywood.

morgan’s been everywhere lately but caught a great interview with him on the mark + brian radio show yesterday.

TED + pdx

less then two weeks now until the sold out inaugural TEDPortland event. you can’t tickets anymore but if you’re around town next saturday it might be worth hanging around outside to see what you can pick up. can’t wait to hear what’s in store but even more excited to know that this should no doubt be a yearly event here.

+ with all that pdx has to offer in the way of ideas, creativity + downright zaniness it should only get richer in the future. definitely like to see more industrial design + architecture in future rounds.

out in the wild

if you’re into film or into bikes or better yet into films about bikes then your film festival is coming up. next weekend here in beautifully soggy portland, oregon filmed by bike will be rocking the clinton street theater (+ the entire street in general). the opening night street party is gaining a reputation of fun + the thousands of bikes make for great community.

if you’re around for some of the flicks there’s a mix of short films + a few new longer inclusions this year as well. there will also be a filmmakers panel after two of the showings. i’ll be spewing on one of those after the sat 5pm showing so if you’re up for an earful drop by. actually, stoked to be on a panel with producer kevin sullivan.

Our Filmmaker Q+A sessions are powerful nights in the theater, an opportunity to get to know the creative minds behind some of Filmed by Bike’s favorite movies.

When the LCD Soundsystem remade the video for their song Drunk Girls, they chose to film it with a cadre of Portland bikers. The result is a gritty party video. Producer Kevin Sullivan will be on stage to discuss this piece, why they chose Portland, how they found the actors and how they developed the rough-and-tumble concept of an underground tall bike jousting bout.

trouble w advertising

from the mind of hugh macleod,

I worked in advertising for many years. My opinion of Madison Avenue is the same as the famous one held by the screenwriter, William Goldman, to describe Hollywood: “Nobody knows anything”.
No matter how clever you are or how much money you spend, every ad campaign is a risk. It may be a hit, or it may flop.
You just don’t know till you’ve already spent your money and the campaign is already out there, filling up the cultural ether.

really? or is there a system in place?

this isn’t bad either.

momentum

when you have it life is beyond good because it’s just getting better + yet there’s really no way to keep it on your side as by definition it has to end sometime. 2011 is rolling like this + while i couldn’t put my finger on it recently someone else was able to do that for me.

momentum.

use it wisely + keep it on your side.

that’s what happens with all the good projects, all the good stuff in general. i think 2011 is the year for it. can see it in this gallery of scandinavian landscapes for sure + imagine over the course of six weeks in an old “76 toyota corolla that peter boel just keep rolling with it. feeling it. it shows. fantastic work from what i’m glad to call my homeland.

here’s a start from something totally different. something with a bit of momentum though.

ahhh…. the japanese

明けましておめでとうございます = happy new year.

this is strange stuff optically + i’m interested in the repercussions down the road. optical camouflage via kinect by interactive designer takayuki fukatsu.

great photo project tokyo compression from hong kong based michael wolf. if you’ve ever had the joy of riding in tokyo at rush hour you might feel this a little deeper. unfortunately i had the pleasure a few years ago on my way back to tokyo from pataogonia headquarters south in kamakura. the stories are true. not as bad as it sounds or looks though. i mean, the first gentlemen is even sporting a smile.

creativity

a few ideas on creavity for friday:

adweek story minds in motion: space for creativity on finding the right head space for creativity to happen.

next up michael bierut on i don’t consider myself creative via ape.

+ one of my favs, the fantastic hugh macleod on the easy process of how to be creative. this guy is filled with gems + just can’t be stopped. if you’ve never been inspired by his work then dive in + see what he does as he embodies so much creativity it’s scary. sample nuggets o’ wisdom;

+ if you’re tying it into business, this is fascinating – jay z + warren buffet on what it takes.
