“the enemy of art is indifference…

… never underestimate your potential to make a difference.”

“art can affect change.”

“what at first was a budgetary limitation turned into an asthetic asset eventually.”

recent celeb and everywhere artist shepard fairey talks about his views on creativity, tagging, andre the giant + more in this segment. interesting to hear his take, “that grafitti is an eyesore but advertising is ok because it’s paid for, is ridiculous to me”. agree with his methods or not, he’s a great communicator that believes art is open to all and pushes his work in the direction to further that cause – that alone deserves respect.

apparently he’s saying + doing the right things as now sak’s fifth avenue is on the shepard fairey machine via brandweek here. he’s done up a new campaign for the struggling luxury retailer. fairey says, “that he decided to create the new campaign because ‘I’m not interested in speaking to a small group; I’ve always thought it was the duty of intelligence to make art for the people.’”

ideas from $$$ or vice versa?

it’s true, inspiration strikes at the strangest time. we all know that. what’s refreshing, particularly in this day in age is to see it win out. which is just the case this past weekend with our collective psuedo national holiday + advertising battle royale known as the super bowl.

two unemployed bros from indiana landed a 30 second spot they put together for about $2k for doritos. titled free doritos it rated higher in viewer polls than anything else…. + won the pair a million cold ones to kickstart their filmmaking business.

money + the future

there’s no doubt now that world economies are in flux like never before and it’s having a huge impact on the photo, advertising, editorial and newspaper markets. hell, it’s affecting every aspect of our field including the vendors we rely on and the stores we choose to purchase from. there are dire predictions from shooters in every corner.

money is one part of this business that many seem to shy away from. i’ve always preferred to deal with it upfront – regardless who you’re working with. we all need it so get it settled and everyone’s free to work. seth resnick pushes this view all the time, “business first, creativity second”.

with this in mind, the coming year will prove challenging for most if not all of us. shrinking budgets and slower work will mean being smart. of course, ideally we’re smart all the time and run our businesses accordingly so there won’t be any huge changes, right. if you are looking for ideas here’s a few. i always find it amazing though how many people are out of touch. and even more amazing (appalling?) is how many corporations and businesses simply don’t seem to get what’s happening out here on the ground.

outside of our control is what the manufacturers are putting into the market for us as “pros”. having been a nikon man for years i made the switch back in 2006 and never looked back for too many reasons to list. a firm believer in the vision not the tools i rarely dabble in partisian politics but i have to admit that nikon’s lastest move with their premier camera is beyond me – $8k is steep. especially with the good folks at canon breaking all expense models with the new 5D Mark II releasing this month (should have mine any day now). though the characters are not the most appropriate, this video really hits the spot with a few laughs. feel free to play it for your non geek friends and see if they get any of it to rate how far digital photography has seeped into mainstream culture.

and if you have any questions left as to the viability of video entering our world with the merging of technology in both these new cameras then let south korea dispel that notion. time to start longing for those film cameras …

get involved

with winter moving in and crowds heading indoors here’s a few options to get involved. whatever the outlet may be get your opinion together and get it out there.

youtube: project direct – upto 5 minutes of pure independent short film with little more than a red telephone to get you started. like to go head to head with out video jockey … then jump on this. deadline is only two+ weeks off.

rowell award – the 2008 award for outstanding accomplishments in the field of outdoor photography. last year’s winner was jim balog so the bar is high for this go round. nominations due 12.31.

and this is my favorite visual in a long time. whatever you do, be inspired. shoot what you know. what you see. what you feel slipping between your fingers. in the case of phillip toledano this is dayswithmyfather. perhaps one of the most powerful hidden gems on the entire online universe, this story moves me, the layout by portland wunderkind’s fashionbuddha leaves you with a stipped down experience perfectly suited to the material. dig in.

copyright + search + white space = change

recently have heard the rumbling of several changes that are currently or soon to occur with significant impacts on issues that are close / directly related to visual media. while unclear now as to the outcome i think that each of these changes will have far reaching affects.

copyright :: talking with a german journalist lately she was filling me in on royalties she gets through a government program there. asking what the hell she was talking about she filled me in on the concept. basically, on behalf of writers throughout the country (you have to prove that your published, how many words your write, etc) the government asses a tax on all copy machine manufacturers. it’s a type of royalty for her based on the use, or possible use, of her work.

in this same respect, asmp released a bulletin late last week detailing a ‘landmark’ settlement between google and the authors guild. the ag “has been the published writer’s advocate for effective copyright, fair contracts, and free expression since 1912.” in that capacity they went after the google monster for putting page after page of millions of books online thereby infringing on copyright. this is my favorite clip from that bulletin,

Many of these were older books in the public domain, but millions of others were still under copyright protection. Nick Taylor, then the president of the Guild, saw Google

passion + integrity = photographic style

here’s a little fun for the weekend.

glen friedman is a one man history show.

hailed by the washington post, “one of the greats of his generation”.

a one man documentary machine of skating & music history. he has covered iconic artists such as Fugazi, Black Flag, Ice-T, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, The Misfits, Bad Brains, Beastie Boys, Run-D.M.C., KRS-One, and Public Enemy, as well as classic skateboarding originators such as Tony Alva, Jay Adams, Alan Gelfand, Duane Peters, and Stacy Peralta.

his ‘fuck you‘ series has been exhibited worldwide and put into books. and he’s done it all with style and dare i say grace.

this is what passion can do – it has carried glen far beyond what he ever thought but he’s one dedicated mofo who deserves it.

years outside in minutes

Working outside and having that as my background has done more for my inspiration and career as a photographer than anything else I can think of. Teaching in conjunction with the rocky mountain school of photography this week I thought a little video of thanks was appropriate to all that the outdoor industry has provided me.

sharp negotiating

here’s the unfortunate truth or ‘how not to work it’ with business these days. i’ve talked about the meat of things involved here in an earlier post here. this is a uniquely photo related video but with the economy tanking it’s apparent throughout the creative / visual media industry. thanks jeff for the link. here’s to a few laughs over the father’s day weekend.

Green

Earth Day mentions for this green week:

First of all, a handful of ideas I touched on back in 10.2007 here including writing in green causes as line items. And if you’re into the work of recent Rowell Award winner James Balog, then this post on Glacier National Park photography I previously alluded to is right up your alley.

Closer to me personally is my video point man Nico Hudak. Brilliant with motion and capable of creativity beyond mere mortals Nico is a great collaborator. We have a great things in store. While you can check out his work anytime here, inline with the cause of the week check out his documentary Triple Bottom Line (above). If you’re unfamiliar with the phrase check it out and start making it work. The NY Times Magazine even brings it up this week.

The photo community has it’s green fill via the pdnonline segment, “Shooting For Green Agencies” though you have to have a subscription (not a bad idea). More in the feature story, “Paint It Green” in PDN’s April 2008 issue.

Lastly, for all you trend setters in this week of looking ahead, don’t forget to pay attention to the future … or at least don’t ignore those who have.
